St. Charles Borromeo lived in times not unlike our own. In the mid 16th century, the Church was splintering with the Protestant Reformation in full swing. The Council of Trent was convoked to address a crisis in teaching, worship, and morality. If this were not enough, a plague ravished northern Italy that resulted in significant unemployment, mandatory quarantines, and thousands of deaths.

Renewal was desperately needed and thankfully, God enlisted a whole new batch of saints for the challenge. Among them, St. Charles Borromeo, was a shining star. A man of deep prayer and extraordinary charity for his flock, Charles gave his life to renew the Catholic faith in Milan, which was the largest diocese in the Church at the time.
