Baptism

Baptism at St. Therese

“Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” John 3:5

The origin and foundation of Baptism is Jesus. Jesus presented himself for baptism given by John the Baptist before beginning his ministry. Even though Jesus did not need to be baptized, He did so to show solidarity with us, his people, giving us the way to be reconciled to the Father. He then commanded his disciples to baptize all nations. Baptism, therefore, is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation and the foundation of the Catholic life. Through Baptism, we are freed from original sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the Catholic Church. Whether celebrating the baptism of an infant or an adult entering the faith, this sacrament marks the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ. We are honored to accompany families and individuals as they take this important step in faith.

WHAT THE CHURCH TEACHES

The entrance into the life of God

Baptism is the beginning of the whole Christian life, and one of the great joys of our parish. In the waters of Baptism we are cleansed from original sin, made members of the Church, and adopted as children of God.

Baptism for infants and children

Congratulations on the gift of your child. We are eager to celebrate this Sacrament with your family and welcome your little one into the Church.

Infant and child baptisms are scheduled monthly, usually on the second Sunday of the month, unless there is a scheduling conflict. Since Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation, active and practicing membership is expected of the parents. A preparation session for parents is required by Church law. Each child may have a godfather and a godmother, although only one is required. Additional guidelines will be given when registering for baptism.

Baptism for adults

Adults who have never been baptized prepare for Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist together through OCIA, the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a welcoming, no-pressure way to explore the faith.

A place for your family

A child’s Baptism is often the beginning of a beautiful journey of faith. Not only for your child, but for your entire family. Whether you’re new to St. Therese or have been searching for a parish to call home, we are truly excited to welcome you into our community. We hope this special day is just the beginning of a lifelong relationship with our parish family. Visit our I’m new here page to learn more or simply give us a call. We would be delighted to answer your questions and help you feel right at home.
